Healthy Church: Gospel Doctrine
/What does the gospel have to do with a healthy church? Everything. In this episode of Salty Believer Unscripted, Josiah Walker and Bryan Catherman continue our series on healthy churches by turning our attention to gospel doctrine. Using the marks identified by 9Marks as a roadmap for the series because they give us a helpful framework for getting into Scripture and thinking about what Christ intends his local church to be.
The gospel is certainly the good news we proclaim to unbelievers, but it is not something Christians graduate from after conversion. Nor does the gospel suddenly appear somewhere around Matthew 1. The good news of God’s saving work runs through the entire Bible, ultimately centered on the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. That means gospel doctrine should shape much more than our evangelism. It should shape how we read the Bible, preach, worship, pray, disciple one another, and live together as Christ’s church. A healthy church does not merely know how to explain the gospel. The gospel sits at the center of its life.
They also discussed the CSB Connecting Scripture New Testament, a resource that highlights Old Testament quotations and allusions throughout the New Testament and helps readers see how Scripture interprets Scripture.
